    Summary

    Severe cerebral vasospasm reduces red blood cell deformability. While pentoxifylline showed potential to improve this, it was insufficient for significant clinical improvement in vasospasm patients.

    Background:

    • Cerebral vasospasm is a critical complication following subarachnoid hemorrhage.
    • Impaired red blood cell (RBC) deformability can exacerbate microcirculatory dysfunction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of severe cerebral vasospasm on RBC deformability.
    • To evaluate the potential of pentoxifylline in ameliorating RBC deformability during vasospasm.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparison of RBC deformability in patients with and without severe cerebral vasospasm.
    • Assessment of pentoxifylline's effect on RBC deformability in vasospastic conditions.

    Main Results:

    • RBC deformability was significantly decreased in patients with severe cerebral vasospasm compared to controls.
    • Pentoxifylline exhibited a trend towards improving RBC deformability in the presence of vasospasm.

    Conclusions:

    • Severe cerebral vasospasm adversely affects RBC deformability.
