Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the reporting and enrollment of racial and ethnic minorities in phase III cancer clinical trials.
  • To compare trial participant demographics with reference population data.

Main Methods:

  • Searched the National Library of Medicine's Clinical Trials database for phase III lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer trials.
  • Utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database for reference population demographics.

Main Results:

  • Race and ethnicity data were reported in 86.7% and 60.2% of 181 trials, respectively, with trends showing improvement over time.
  • White participants were predominant (76.3%), with lower representation of Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, and American Indian/Alaska Native individuals compared to SEER data.
  • Minority enrollment increased from 19.4% before 2011 to 26.2% after 2015, but disparities persist across specific cancer types and minority groups.

Conclusions:

  • While reporting and enrollment of racial and ethnic minorities in clinical trials are improving, they remain insufficient.
  • Further research using real-world data is needed to establish targeted recruitment goals and enhance diversity by understanding patient geographic distribution.
