    Summary

    Dental implant surgery using conventional versus single drill protocols shows similar heat generation. However, the single drill method significantly reduces drilling exposure time, enhancing surgical efficiency.

    Background:

    • Osteotomy for dental implant placement requires precise temperature control to prevent thermal damage.
    • Digitally guided surgery offers enhanced accuracy but necessitates evaluation of different drilling protocols.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare heat generation during osteotomy for dental implant placement between conventional (sequential drilling) and single drill protocols in digitally guided surgery.
    • To evaluate differences in thermal exposure time between these two drilling methods.

    Main Methods:

    • An ex vivo bovine rib model and an in vivo rabbit tibia model were used.
    • Temperature and time were measured using a type K thermocouple.
    • Two groups were compared: conventional sequential drilling (n=20) and a simplified single drill protocol (n=20).

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in temperature elevation was observed between conventional (1.977°C) and single drill (2.634°C) protocols (p=0.1688).
    • Exposure time was significantly longer for the conventional protocol (107.105s) compared to the single drill protocol (16.842s).
    • In vivo and ex vivo models showed comparable mean temperature increases (0.365°C vs 0.378°C, p=0.926).

    Conclusions:

    • Both conventional and single drill protocols for implant bed preparation in digitally guided surgery produce similar intraoperative temperatures.
    • The single drill protocol offers a significant advantage by reducing thermal exposure time compared to conventional sequential drilling.
