Summary

Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) is linked to aggression in humans. Sex differences were observed in the LH-thalamus rsFC, suggesting distinct neural pathways for aggression.

  • Previous research indicated distinct roles for the medial (MH) and lateral hypothalamus (LH) in aggression.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding the relationship between hypothalamic resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and human aggression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between LH and MH rsFC and aggression in a large human cohort.
  • To explore potential sex differences in these neural connections related to aggression.

  • Utilized Human Connectome Project (HCP) data from 745 young adults.
  • Analyzed rsFC of the LH and MH using voxel-wise regression against aggression scores.
  • Examined sex differences in rsFC-aggression correlations.

  • Significant negative correlations were found between LH rsFC and aggression scores with regions including the middle temporal gyrus, occipital gyrus, and thalamus (in men).
  • The LH-thalamus rsFC showed a significant sex difference in its correlation with aggression.

Conclusions:

  • LH rsFC and its sex-specific modulation via the LH-thalamus pathway are implicated in human aggression.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate sex-specific neural mechanisms underlying aggression and related mental health traits.
