    Summary

    This study on speech perception found that vowel contrast is based on normalized formant values, not feature detector fatigue or response bias. Auditory contrast theories best explain these findings.

    Background:

    • Selective adaptation and anchoring effects in speech perception are explained by various hypotheses.
    • These include auditory/phonetic feature detector fatigue, response bias, and auditory contrast.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the underlying mechanisms of contextual contrast in speech perception.
    • To differentiate between competing hypotheses of auditory/phonetic feature detector fatigue, response bias, and auditory contrast.

    Main Methods:

    • Three seven-step [hId]-[h epsilon d] continua were created varying in fundamental frequency (F0) and vocal tract length.
    • Participants identified stimuli under equiprobable control and anchoring conditions.

    Main Results:

    • Differential contrast effects were observed based on whether anchors differed in F0, absolute formant frequencies, or both.
    • Findings were inconsistent with feature detector fatigue and response bias hypotheses.

    Conclusions:

    • Vowel contrast in speech perception is based on normalized formant values.
    • This supports a version of the auditory-contrast theory.
