The Vicarious Resilience Scale (VRS) is a valid and reliable tool for Turkish mental health professionals. This study adapted the VRS to measure vicarious resilience in therapists working with trauma survivors.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Trauma Studies
Background:
- Vicarious resilience is the positive impact on therapists from witnessing client healing.
- The Vicarious Resilience Scale (VRS) is the first instrument to measure this phenomenon.
- Evaluating the VRS in Turkish culture is crucial for its application.
Purpose of the Study:
- To adapt the Vicarious Resilience Scale (VRS) for use in Turkish.
- To examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the VRS.
- To assess the validity and reliability of the VRS in a Turkish mental health professional sample.
Main Methods:
- The VRS was translated and administered electronically to 337 mental health professionals globally.
- Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess construct validity.
- Criterion-related validity was examined through correlations with other psychological measures.
Main Results:
- CFA confirmed seven factors consistent with the original VRS.
- The Turkish VRS demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach's α = .95).
- The scale showed convergent validity with positive outcomes (posttraumatic growth, resilience, quality of life) and discriminant validity from negative outcomes (depression, anxiety, stress).
Conclusions:
- The adapted VRS is a valid and reliable measure for Turkish mental health professionals.
- The scale can aid in recognizing and cultivating vicarious resilience.
- Findings support the use of the VRS in Turkish clinical settings for therapists working with trauma survivors.
