Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

31.7K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Fundamental Attribution Error

12.8K
According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Hindsight Biases

3.4K
Hindsight bias leads you to believe that the event you just experienced was predictable, even though it really wasn’t. In other words, you knew all along that things would turn out the way they did. Can you relate this to the phrase "Hindsight is 20/20" now?

Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

7.3K
Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in...

Cause and Effect01:53

Cause and Effect

10.9K
While variables are sometimes correlated because one does cause the other, it could also be that some other factor, a confounding variable, is actually causing the systematic movement in our variables of interest. For instance, as sales in ice cream increase, so does the overall rate of crime. Is it possible that indulging in your favorite flavor of ice cream could send you on a crime spree? Or, after committing crime do you think you might decide to treat yourself to a cone?

Attribution Theory00:56

Attribution Theory

12.9K
Behavior is a product of both the situation (e.g., cultural influences, social roles, and the presence of bystanders) and of the person (e.g., personality characteristics). Subfields of psychology tend to focus on one influence or behavior over others. Situationism is the view that our behavior and actions are determined by our immediate environment and surroundings. In contrast, dispositionism holds that our behavior is determined by internal factors (Heider, 1958).

Summary

Contextual cues speed up decision-making for goalkeepers in split-second penalty decisions. This research shows context influences how quickly evidence is gathered, improving expert anticipation in time-constrained situations.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Sports Science
  • Decision Neuroscience

Background:

  • Experts often outperform novices in time-constrained situations by utilizing advanced cues.
  • The role of contextual information in modulating split-second decision-making remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how contextual information influences real-time evidence accumulation in time-constrained decisions.
  • To examine the impact of context on decision-making parameters using handball penalty scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • Hierarchical drift-diffusion modeling (HDDM) was validated for analyzing split-second handball penalty decisions.
  • Participants predicted shot direction in video clips with manipulated contextual probability information.

Main Results:

  • Contextual information significantly affected the drift rate, accelerating evidence accumulation when congruent with the action.
  • Incongruent context information led to slower evidence accumulation.
  • Non-decision time was prolonged by the mere presence of contextual information, irrespective of congruence.

Conclusions:

  • Contextual information plays a crucial role in modulating evidence accumulation during rapid, time-constrained decisions.
  • This study demonstrates the impact of context on decision-making dynamics in sports, specifically in high-pressure penalty situations.
