[Phenobarbital prevention of intraventricular hemorrhages in premature infants]
Klinische Padiatrie
|March 1, 1985
Insights
Phenobarbital significantly reduces intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in premature infants. This study now recommends phenobarbital for all premature babies weighing under 1800 grams to prevent IVH.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal Medicine
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a common complication in premature infants.
- Previous studies suggested phenobarbital may reduce IVH risk.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy of phenobarbital in preventing intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in premature infants.
- To determine the optimal birth weight threshold for phenobarbital prophylaxis.
Summary:
- A controlled study involving 129 premature infants demonstrated that phenobarbital administration significantly lowers the incidence of IVH across all degrees.
- Phenobarbital treatment was associated with a notable reduction in the occurrence and severity of IVH.
Impact:
- The findings support the prophylactic use of phenobarbital in premature infants.
- This research informs clinical practice guidelines for IVH prevention in high-risk neonates.
- The study advocates for the routine administration of phenobarbital to premature infants weighing less than 1800 grams.
Abstract:
We have extended our controlled study to a total of 129 patients. Infants treated with phenobarbital confirm to have a significant lower incidence of IVH of all degrees. We now give phenobarbital to all prematures under 1800 g birthweight.
