Background:

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is crucial in modern surgery but challenging to integrate into training.
Existing evidence on EBM in surgery, focusing on knowledge, attitudes, barriers, and curricula, needs mapping.

Purpose of the Study:

To map existing evidence on the practice of EBM in surgical training.
To identify knowledge, attitudes, barriers, and curricula related to EBM in surgery.

Main Methods:

A scoping review of 50 articles published between 2001-2023.
Systematic literature search across 3 databases and 2 registers, adhering to PRISMA 2018 guidelines.

Main Results:

Surgeons and trainees show EBM awareness but varied terminology understanding; positive attitudes exist, yet clinical experience often prevails.
Key barriers include time constraints, lack of structured training, and research challenges. Competency assessment tools and curricula are lacking.
Educational strategies like journal clubs improve EBM knowledge, but long-term practice change evidence is limited.

Conclusions:

A deeper understanding of stakeholder views on EBM in surgical practice is needed.
Development, implementation, and assessment of educational interventions for EBM in surgery require attention.
Tailored strategies for assessing EBM competency in surgical trainees are essential.
