This study introduces a new transformer-less photovoltaic inverter topology that enhances efficiency and reduces harmonics. The proposed design achieves high efficiency and improved power quality for renewable energy systems.
Area of Science:
- Power Electronics
- Renewable Energy Systems
- Inverter Technology
Background:
- Photovoltaic inverters are crucial for renewable energy but often face trade-offs between efficiency, cost, and size.
- Higher efficiency in traditional inverters can lead to increased component count, raising costs and bulk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel single-phase seven-level transformer-less inverter topology with a common ground.
- To enhance efficiency and reduce harmonic distortion in photovoltaic systems.
Main Methods:
- Development of a single-phase seven-level transformer-less common ground topology using 10 switches, 4 capacitors, and 1 diode.
- Implementation of an improved Phase Shift (PS) Modulation Technique to minimize power losses.
Main Results:
- Achieved a highest attainable efficiency of 98.05% at 15W with the improved PS modulation.
- Reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) for voltage harmonics from 17.20% to 15.29%.
- Significantly decreased THD for current harmonics from 10.15% to 5.07%.
Conclusions:
- The proposed transformer-less inverter topology offers a compelling solution for efficient and high-quality power conversion in photovoltaic applications.
- Validation through simulation and hardware results confirms the performance and reliability of the new inverter design.
