Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) offers a promising palliative treatment for canine nasal hemangiosarcoma. This procedure successfully reduced tumor size and symptoms in a dog, with sustained effects observed over 10 months.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Oncology
- Interventional Radiology
Background:
- Nasal hemangiosarcoma presents a significant challenge in canine oncology.
- Recurrence after conventional treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy is common.
Observation:
- A 10-year-old Welsh Corgi with recurrent nasal hemangiosarcoma exhibited persistent nasal discharge and facial deformity.
- Previous treatments provided only temporary symptom relief.
Findings:
- Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) using carboplatin and gel foam was performed as a palliative measure.
- The procedure resulted in successful tumor size reduction and symptom alleviation.
- CT scans over 10 months confirmed sustained tumor shrinkage with no vessel reperfusion, indicating a durable effect.
Implications:
- TACE demonstrates potential as an effective palliative option for recurrent nasal tumors in dogs.
- This case suggests TACE could be a valuable therapeutic strategy when other treatments fail.
- Further research is warranted to establish TACE protocols for veterinary nasal tumor management.
