Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

57
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Traditional autism diagnostics for motor function are subjective and lack objective brain-body connection markers.
  • Digital health innovations offer new ways to collect and analyze physiological data, but autism research remains siloed.
  • Existing tools are often inaccessible to families and care teams, hindering clinical translation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the Move Initiative, a coalition focused on advancing and refining movement measurement in autism.
  • To highlight the need for integrating technological advances into accessible, scalable tools for autism research.
  • To promote dynamic, longitudinal motor screenings and continuous assessment of interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Main Methods:

  • Leveraging advanced technologies like wearable sensors for active and passive data collection.
  • Integrating machine learning and agentic AI for comprehensive data analysis.
  • Fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration among self-advocates, families, clinicians, researchers, and industry.

Main Results:

  • The Move Initiative aims to make motor screenings more dynamic and longitudinal.
  • It will support continuous assessment of targeted interventions for ASD.
  • Deep, longitudinal, multi-modal profiling will address data gaps and enable new research avenues.

Conclusions:

  • There is a pressing need to merge technological advances for objective autism assessment.
  • The Move Initiative seeks to accelerate the integration of new knowledge into widespread practice.
  • Comprehensive profiling of individuals with ASD offers opportunities for a more thorough understanding of this condition.
