Background:

Acupuncture use for pediatric conditions is increasing in the U.S.
Previous reviews exist, but significant research has emerged in the last 8 years.
This scoping review updates the evidence on pediatric acupuncture effectiveness.

Approach:

Systematic search for clinical trials and reviews (August 2015 - October 2023).
Included studies were acupuncture-specific, pediatric-focused, and in English.
Literature was synthesized into a scoping review and commentary.

Key Points:

71 publications (42 trials, 29 reviews) covering 17 conditions across 10 countries were identified.
Top research areas include pain, cerebral palsy, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and nausea/vomiting.
Positive evidence exists for postoperative nausea and vomiting; promising evidence for cerebral palsy, nocturnal enuresis, and pain management.

Conclusions:

Pediatric acupuncture trials are a small but significant part of the literature.
Limited trials, small sample sizes, and treatment heterogeneity hinder firm conclusions.
Continued research is warranted, especially for conditions showing recent promise.
