Insights
Common iliac artery stenting effectively treated intermittent claudication in a diabetic patient. This case highlights a successful endovascular intervention for peripheral artery disease in Nepal.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Interventional Cardiology
- Radiology
Background:
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects the lower limbs, often causing claudication.
- Common iliac artery stenosis is a significant cause of PAD, impacting blood flow.
- Diabetes Mellitus and dyslipidemia are key risk factors for atherosclerosis and PAD.
Abstract:
A 68-years-old male patient, previous smoker with history of type II Diabetes Mellitus and dyslipidemia presented with intermittent right-sided unilateral claudication. Color Doppler sonography showed subocclusion of right common iliac artery with ankle-brachial index of 0.42 and Computed Tomography angiogram revealed 70 % diameter stenosis of the vessel. The patient underwent right common iliac artery stenting with immediate and sustained relief of his symptoms. This article summarizes one of the first cases of common iliac artery stenting procedure carried out in Nepal.
