The Quantum-Mechanical Model of an Atom02:45

The Quantum-Mechanical Model of an Atom

41.8K
Shortly after de Broglie published his ideas that the electron in a hydrogen atom could be better thought of as being a circular standing wave instead of a particle moving in quantized circular orbits, Erwin Schrödinger extended de Broglie’s work by deriving what is now known as the Schrödinger equation. When Schrödinger applied his equation to hydrogen-like atoms, he was able to reproduce Bohr’s expression for the energy and, thus, the Rydberg formula governing hydrogen spectra.

Base Quantities and Derived Quantities01:14

Base Quantities and Derived Quantities

19.8K
In any system of units, the units for some physical quantities must be specified through a measurement process. These measurements are the base quantities of the system, and their units are the base units of the system. The algebraic combinations of the base values can then be used to express all other physical quantities. Each of these physical quantities is then referred to as a derived quantity, with each unit being referred to as a derived unit.

Quantum Numbers02:43

Quantum Numbers

34.2K
It is said that the energy of an electron in an atom is quantized; that is, it can be equal only to certain specific values and can jump from one energy level to another but not transition smoothly or stay between these levels.

Estimation of the Physical Quantities01:05

Estimation of the Physical Quantities

4.1K
On many occasions, physicists, other scientists, and engineers need to make estimates of a particular quantity. These are sometimes referred to as guesstimates, order-of-magnitude approximations, back-of-the-envelope calculations, or Fermi calculations. The physicist Enrico Fermi was famous for his ability to estimate various kinds of data with surprising precision. Estimating does not mean guessing a number or a formula at random. Instead, estimation means using prior experience and sound...

Sampling Theorem01:15

Sampling Theorem

285
In signal processing, the analysis of continuous-time signals, denoted as x(t), often involves sampling techniques to convert these signals into discrete-time signals. This process is essential for digital representation and manipulation. A critical component in sampling is the train of impulses, characterized by the sampling interval and the sampling frequency. The relationship between these parameters and the original signal's properties dictates the success of the sampling process.

Relating Angular And Linear Quantities - II

5.4K
In the case of circular motion, the linear tangential speed of a particle at a radius from the axis of rotation is related to the angular velocity by the relation:

Area of Science:

  • Methodology in Social Sciences
  • Mixed Methods Research
  • Qualitative Data Analysis

Background:

  • Quantitizing (transforming qualitative data into quantitative forms) is underutilized in research.
  • A lack of methodological exploration limits the proliferation of quantitizing.
  • Existing research needs a comprehensive framework to guide quantitizing practices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To critically reevaluate the process of quantitizing.
  • To propose a comprehensive meta-framework for quantitizing using the 5W1H approach.
  • To introduce the DIME-Driven Model of Quantitizing (Descriptive, Inferential, Measurement, Exploratory).

Main Methods:

  • Development of a 5W1H meta-framework for quantitizing.
  • Categorization of quantitizing into four types within the DIME-Driven Model.
  • Analysis of quantitizing's application across qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research.

Main Results:

  • The proposed meta-framework and DIME model provide a structured approach to quantitizing.
  • Quantitizing is shown to be applicable across diverse research traditions, enhancing utility and precision.
  • Variable adoption of quantitizing is linked to philosophical perspectives, though few reject it outright.

Conclusions:

  • Quantitizing is a crucial methodological tool with transformative potential for research.
  • Balanced use of quantitizing complements qualitative analysis, enhancing clarity and applicability.
  • Researchers are encouraged to adopt quantitizing to enrich analytical tools and research findings.
