Summary

Compression pantyhose (CP) may help ballet dancers recover faster by reducing muscle fatigue after exercise. This pilot study suggests CP could be beneficial for dancers needing quick recovery between performances.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if compressive pantyhose (CP) affects performance, recovery, and physiological markers in ballet dancers.
  • To assess the impact of CP during a ballet-specific aerobic fitness test (BAFT).
  • To test research feasibility for future studies.

Main Methods:

  • Nine young ballerinas participated in two sessions wearing either CP (20-30 mmHg) or placebo pantyhose (PLA).
  • Assessments included heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), perceived recovery (PRS), delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), and a standing heel-rise test.
  • Measurements were taken during and after the BAFT, with follow-ups at 24 hours.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in HR or RPE between CP and PLA conditions.
  • However, CP showed an attenuation in acute fatigue, while PLA exhibited a performance decrement in the heel-rise test post-exercise.
  • CP mitigated acute fatigue in the triceps surae muscle compared to PLA.

Conclusions:

  • Compressive pantyhose may aid in the acute recovery of ballet dancers by mitigating muscle fatigue.
  • CP could be particularly relevant for dancers requiring rapid recovery between multiple daily performances.
  • The study confirmed the feasibility of the research procedures for future investigations.
