Preoperative grip strength may help predict the difficulty patients experience using inflatable penile prostheses (IPP) after surgery for erectile dysfunction. These simple tests can aid in patient selection.

Background:

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) significantly impacts quality of life.
  • Inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement is a surgical option for ED.
  • Predicting postoperative outcomes can optimize patient selection and counseling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if preoperative dexterity assessments predict successful outcomes after IPP implantation.
  • To identify factors influencing patient satisfaction and device usability post-IPP.

Main Methods:

  • Preoperative assessments included the 9-hole peg test, grip strength, and the Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand questionnaire.
  • Subjective handshake strength was also recorded.
  • Postoperative outcomes (satisfaction, ease of use, confidence) were assessed at 3 months.

Main Results:

  • Grip strength showed an inverse association with postoperative difficulty using the IPP (P=0.037).
  • Increased age was linked to decreased confidence in device use (P=0.068).
  • Other dexterity tests did not show statistically significant correlations with outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative grip strength can be a valuable tool for assessing manual function in patients considering IPP.
  • These inexpensive and easily administered tests can supplement preoperative evaluations.
  • Further research may refine the use of dexterity assessments in IPP patient selection.
