Pain management is an ethical responsibility of all professional nurses. Pain is a common symptom experienced in clients across the lifespan.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management.

Design:

A retrospective descriptive design.

Methods:

Use of the Pediatric Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain Management (PNKAS Shriners Version 2002). The sample comprised of scores from 320 students enrolled in a pediatric course at a private school of nursing in the Northeastern United States.

Results:

Findings identified that the rate of correct answers ranged from 21.95% to 97.56%. Results showed a low level of student nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management.

Conclusions:

The results highlight that regardless of the curricular changes that have been made, students continue to struggle with pediatric pain management with emphasis on pain management pharmacology.

Clinical Implications:

Pediatric pain education needs to be improved in the undergraduate educational curricula. It is important for nursing schools to consider the possibility of integrating pain education in a systematic manner to better prepare students.
