Abstract:
Primary acquired pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is associated with reticulocytopenia and a significant decrease in bone marrow erythroblasts. We describe three patients with refractory idiopathic PRCA treated with rituximab. Two were transfusion-dependent and unresponsive to various immunosuppressive therapies, and were successfully weaned off transfusion following rituximab therapy. The patient who was unresponsive to rituximab achieved remission on cyclosporine but subsequently relapsed. This is the first case report from Japan to describe the effectiveness of rituximab for refractory idiopathic PRCA.
