    Summary

    Serotonin does not provoke changes in lung function for stable asthma patients. This study suggests serotonin is not a reliable tool for assessing bronchial hyperreactivity in asthma.

    Background:

    • Asthma is characterized by bronchial hyperreactivity.
    • Previous research suggested serotonin might induce bronchoconstriction.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of serotonin on lung function in stable asthma patients.
    • To determine if serotonin can be used to assess non-specific bronchial hyperreactivity.

    Main Methods:

    • Bronchial challenge test with increasing concentrations of serotonin (up to 20 mg/ml) in 20 stable asthmatics.
    • Measurement of FEV1 and FVC at 0 and 2 minutes post-provocation.
    • Comparison with PC20 histamine values in a subset of patients.

    Main Results:

    • No significant changes in FEV1 or FVC were observed after serotonin challenge.
    • Serotonin at a concentration of 20 mg/ml did not cause subjective symptoms or affect lung function in three additional asthmatics.
    • PC20 histamine values in the first eight patients ranged from 0.125-0.65 mg/ml.

    Conclusions:

    • Serotonin does not appear to be a reliable agent for evaluating non-specific bronchial hyperreactivity in asthma.
    • Findings contradict some earlier studies suggesting a role for serotonin in asthma pathophysiology.
