The Role of Prehabilitation in Oncology Patients Undergoing Complex Systemic Anticancer Therapy
1The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
Objectives:
To review the recent literature around the role of patient-centric prehabilitation for oncology patients undergoing complex systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) and the nurse's role in this area.
Method:
A narrative review of recent peer-reviewed literature, national guidance, and government strategy for prehabilitation in oncology patients undergoing complex SACT.
Results/Conclusion:
Prehabilitation interventions in people receiving complex SACT are feasible and benefit patient outcomes. These results must still be viewed with caution; however, as of now, there are only small-scale studies in this area, although larger-scale studies are now being done. The role of the nurse is key here (as part of the interdisciplinary team) through the establishment of the therapeutic relationship underpinning patient screening, assessment, intervention implementation, and patient reassessment, ensuring care is dynamic, consistent, and tailored to patient needs.
Implications For Nursing Practice:
The review has discussed the beneficial patient outcomes from prehabilitation in patients receiving complex SACT, but more research is warranted in the form of larger multisite trials to increase the validity of the prehabilitation interventions. The review advocates for the role of the nurse in the provision of prehabilitation in SACT oncology patients through the provision of personalized patient care.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
