Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Optoelectronics
  • Surface Engineering

Background:

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are crucial for modern displays.
  • Efficient light extraction remains a challenge in OLED technology.
  • Existing methods often involve complex or costly fabrication processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce a cost-effective and efficient method for enhancing light extraction in OLEDs.
  • To develop a wavy-patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate using oxygen (O2) plasma treatment.
  • To optimize the wavy structure for improved optical performance and display quality.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of wavy-patterned PDMS substrates via controlled O2 plasma treatment.
  • Characterization of optical properties, including transmittance and haze.
  • Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations to determine optimal structural parameters.
  • Integration of substrates into bottom-emitting green fluorescent OLED devices.

Main Results:

  • Achieved over 90% total transmittance with adjustable haze (10-70%).
  • Demonstrated a 97% improvement in external quantum efficiency (EQE) for OLEDs (3.5% EQE).
  • Minimized color purity variation to 0.044 and peak wavelength shift to 10 nm.
  • Ensured consistent color purity and intensity across wide viewing angles.

Conclusions:

  • The O2 plasma-treated wavy PDMS substrate is a highly effective method for OLED light extraction.
  • This approach offers significant improvements in efficiency and color stability.
  • The technique presents a promising pathway for developing high-quality, cost-effective displays.
