Current Trends in Nursing II

1.2K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2.4K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the primary modifiable risk factor for glaucoma development and progression.
  • Current clinical follow-up using Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) may miss critical out-of-office IOP peaks and fluctuations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the accuracy of the iCare HOME device against GAT for self-tonometry.
  • To evaluate the influence of corneal characteristics and mean IOP on iCare HOME accuracy.
  • To review the feasibility and acceptance of iCare HOME for home monitoring.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review adhering to PRISMA guidelines.
  • Searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for relevant studies.
  • Included 20 articles from 187 identified records for analysis.

Main Results:

  • iCare HOME demonstrated moderate to good accuracy compared to GAT, with a median underestimation of 1 mmHg.
  • Success rates for self-tonometry ranged from 67.5% to 100% (median 82.5%).
  • The device showed sufficient feasibility and patient acceptance for home use.

Conclusions:

  • Self-tonometry with iCare HOME is an accurate and feasible method for home glaucoma monitoring.
  • It provides valuable out-of-office IOP data, enhancing patient management and empowerment.
  • iCare HOME offers a promising tool to complement traditional clinical IOP measurements.
