    Background:

    • The diving response in animals involves bradycardia, vasoconstriction, and reduced ventilation.
    • While cardiovascular effects are known in humans, ventilatory depression remains less understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ventilatory depression component of the human diving response.
    • To determine the effect of water temperature on this response.

    Main Methods:

    • 16 healthy volunteers and 2 hyperventilating subjects had water compresses applied to their cheeks.
    • Ventilation was measured using spirometry (with mouthpiece and nose clip) and a thoracic transducer.
    • Water temperatures tested were 10°C, 20°C, and 37°C.

    Main Results:

    • Facial cold water immersion induced ventilatory depression to 60-70% of baseline when measured via spirometry.
    • Ventilatory depression reached approximately 60% of control when measured by thoracic transducer, without a nose clip or mouthpiece.
    • No significant difference in ventilatory depression was observed across the tested water temperatures.
    • The ventilatory depression did not adapt within a 5-minute period.

    Conclusions:

    • The human diving response significantly depresses ventilation.
    • This ventilatory depression is consistent regardless of water temperature (10-37°C) or measurement method.
    • The response is sustained for at least 5 minutes and is similar in hyperventilating individuals.
