This study explored developing a community-based participatory research intervention for type 2 diabetes prevention among Middle Eastern women in Sweden. The approach empowered community members, leading to a jointly developed educational program with healthcare collaboration.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Community Health
- Health Promotion
Background:
- Health promotion emphasizes active participation and involvement.
- Engaging women with migration backgrounds in health initiatives requires further exploration.
- Type 2 diabetes prevention is a critical public health concern.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the development of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) intervention for type 2 diabetes prevention.
- To focus on Middle Eastern women with a migration background living in Sweden.
- To understand the process of involving this community in health promotion research.
Main Methods:
- A CBPR conceptual model was followed, focusing on context, partnership, and intervention/research dimensions.
- Dialogue cafés were conducted with community participants and core partners to identify health needs and actions.
- Collaborative methods were used to inventory needs and develop health-promoting actions for type 2 diabetes prevention.
Main Results:
- Two dialogue cafés generated one long-term and three short-term goals.
- A short-term goal focused on creating health circles for food and nutrition, in collaboration with local healthcare.
- A jointly developed, nurse-led educational intervention was created, with community and stakeholder input on evaluation tools.
Conclusions:
- The CBPR approach acknowledges and utilizes diverse stakeholder knowledge, including community members.
- Community knowledge was gathered through participation and dialogue, balancing power dynamics.
- This CBPR intervention model facilitates primary healthcare engagement and health-promoting collaboration.
