Metastasis

5.5K
Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the original site to distant locations in the body. Cancer cells can spread via blood vessels (hematogenous) as well as lymph vessels in the body.
Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition
The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition or EMT is a developmental process commonly observed in wound healing, embryogenesis, and cancer metastasis. EMT is induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) or receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) ligands, which further...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Cancer Metastasis Research
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) presents complex and incompletely defined metastatic patterns.
  • Understanding metastasis sites and associated risk factors is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze clinicopathological attributes of various metastatic sites in RMS patients.
  • To identify population-level risk factors contributing to RMS metastasis.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized SEER database (2000-2017) for 1,300 RMS patients with metastasis.
  • Employed chi-squared/Fisher's exact tests, Kaplan-Meier, log-rank tests, and multivariate logistic regression.
  • Analyzed site-specific metastasis and associated risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Incidence rates: lung (13.1%), bone (12.3%), liver (2.5%), brain (1.2%).
  • Metastasis to lung, bone, liver, and brain significantly reduced cancer-specific survival (CSS).
  • Risk factors for lung metastasis: male gender, larger tumor volume, unfavorable sites. Risk factors for bone metastasis: male gender, larger tumor volume, alveolar RMS.

Conclusions:

  • Identified specific risk factors for lung and bone metastasis in RMS.
  • Findings aid pre-treatment evaluation and potentially improve survival duration for RMS patients.
