Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation and pain.

  • Dietary interventions are increasingly explored as complementary strategies for managing inflammatory conditions like RA.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a structured dietary intervention in alleviating pain and reducing disease activity in adults with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • To compare the effects of a vegan diet-based intervention against a placebo supplement in managing RA symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, crossover study involving 44 adults diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Participants underwent a 16-week Diet phase (vegan diet, food elimination, and reintroduction) and a 16-week Supplement phase (placebo), with a 4-week washout period between phases.
  • Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28) and the number of swollen joints were primary outcome measures.

Main Results:

  • Subanalyses excluding participants who increased medications also demonstrated significant improvements in DAS28 with the diet intervention (P = .003 and P = .009).
  • Between-group analyses revealed statistically significant differences favoring the Diet phase for both DAS28 (P = .01) and swollen joints (P = .047).

Conclusions:

  • The dietary intervention, centered around a vegan diet, was associated with significant symptomatic improvements in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • Dietary modifications represent a viable complementary approach for managing rheumatoid arthritis, potentially reducing disease activity and pain.
  • Further research into specific dietary components and long-term effects is warranted.
