Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of a brief mindfulness intervention combined with a running program on the physical performance of trained runners.
  • To compare the outcomes of a brief mindfulness intervention group against a control group over an 8-week period.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-five trained runners were randomized into either a brief mindfulness intervention group or a control group.
  • Assessments included intermittent maximum speed, heart rate variability, ratings of perceived exertion, fat mass, and physical fitness at baseline, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks.
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated using intermittent maximum speed and 3-min shuttle run tests.

Main Results:

  • A significant time*group interaction was observed for cardiorespiratory fitness (p=0.01).
  • Cardiorespiratory fitness stagnated in the mindfulness group but significantly decreased in the control group over 8 weeks.
  • No significant time*group interactions were found for other measured outcomes (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Brief mindfulness interventions may help mitigate performance decrements related to fatigue in runners during intensive training phases.
  • The observed decrease in cardiorespiratory fitness in the control group may be attributed to high training loads.
  • Stagnation of fitness in the mindfulness group could be linked to the development of psychological skills, potentially counteracting training fatigue.
