    Summary

Plesiomonas shigelloides, a bacterium, was identified as the cause of diarrhea in six Los Angeles patients. This finding is significant as the organism is rarely linked to North American diarrheal illnesses.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Plesiomonas shigelloides is recognized as a cause of diarrhea in East Asia.
    • Its role in diarrheal diseases in North America is less understood.

    Observation:

    • Six patients in Los Angeles presented with diarrhea.
    • Plesiomonas shigelloides was identified as the causative agent in these cases.

    Findings:

    • Plesiomonas shigelloides was confirmed as the cause of diarrhea in six patients.
    • This represents a rare association of the pathogen with diarrheal illness in North America.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the potential for Plesiomonas shigelloides to cause disease in diverse geographic regions.
    • Suggests the need for increased awareness and diagnostic consideration of this pathogen in North American gastroenteritis cases.
