Background:

  • Akinetopsia, or visual motion blindness, causes perception of motion as disjointed 'jumps' or 'freeze frames.'
  • The condition's pathophysiology is not fully understood, despite the known role of cortical area V5/MT in visual motion processing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review case descriptions of motion blindness, including those with additional symptoms.
  • To elucidate the phenomenological, pathophysiological, and etiological heterogeneity of akinetopsia.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a systematic review of 25 clinical and 27 experimental case descriptions of akinetopsia.
  • Analyzed data on symptom presentation, course, laterality, and underlying causes.

Main Results:

  • Clinical cases showed varied presentations: 12% hemiakinetopsia, 50% continuous symptoms, 52% chronic course.
  • Left V5/MT susceptibility noted in right-handed individuals (experimental); right V5/MT dominance suggested in clinical cases.
  • Severity correlates with visual motion network integrity and object speed; organic lesions often resist treatment.

Conclusions:
