Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

4.1K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Current Trends in Nursing II

1.2K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

10.7K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities III01:16

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities III

639
Nurse-to-nurse relationships are legally required to adhere to professional standards, ensuring a respectful and positive working environment. Professional conduct demands that nurses treat all colleagues respectfully and courteously, fostering a productive, supportive workplace. Nurses must actively eliminate bullying, discrimination, and harassment to maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
Cultivating a culture of collaboration and mutual respect among nurses transcends mere enhancement...

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities II

681
Establishing a secure, collaborative nurse-patient relationship is crucial for delivering high-quality care. This relationship, founded on trust, respect, and honesty, enhances the patient's comfort and willingness to share vital health information. For example, a nurse who listens actively and without judgment provides clear information about health conditions and treatment options and respects patient decisions, which builds a trusting relationship.
Communication between nurses and...

Summary

Night shift work among nurses significantly increases the risk of needlestick and sharps injuries (NSIs). Sleep disturbances, mental health issues, and specific worker factors are key contributors to these occupational injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Nursing Research
  • Sleep Medicine

Background:

  • Shift work schedules and demanding workloads disrupt nurses' sleep homeostasis.
  • This disruption elevates the risk of occupational injuries, including needlestick and sharps injuries (NSIs).
  • Understanding the link between sleep disturbances and NSIs is crucial for nurse safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between sleep disturbances from shift work and the occurrence of NSIs in nurses.
  • To identify worker and occupational factors associated with NSIs.
  • To analyze the impact of insomnia and sleepiness symptoms on NSI risk in nurses working night shifts.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 348 nurses in Santiago de Guayaquil, Ecuador.
  • Data collected included sociodemographic, occupational, and work schedule details, alongside NSI incidents.
  • Validated questionnaires assessed emotional status, sleepiness, and insomnia symptoms; logistic regression analyzed NSI risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Nurses working night shifts had a higher prevalence of NSIs (33.2%) compared to other shifts (29.0%).
  • High levels of depression, anxiety, and stress were linked to recent NSIs.
  • Logistic regression identified female sex, less experience, psychotropic drug use, and sleepiness/insomnia symptoms as significant risk factors for NSIs in night-shift nurses.

Conclusions:

  • Night shift work is associated with an increased risk of NSIs among nurses.
  • Sleep disturbances and mental health issues are significant factors contributing to NSIs.
  • Preventive strategies focusing on sleep health and addressing occupational factors are needed to enhance nurse safety.
