Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

1.5K
The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results...

    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Public Health
    • Geriatric Medicine

    Background:

    • Falls are a significant risk for older adults, leading to injury and decreased independence.
    • Assisted living communities present unique challenges for fall prevention.
    • Evidence-based education is crucial for empowering older adults to manage fall risks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week interdisciplinary educational program on fall prevention.
    • To provide evidence-based fall prevention information to adults aged 65 years and older.
    • To assess the impact of the program on fall risk knowledge, mobility, and fear of falling.

    Main Methods:

    • An 8-week educational program with eight 1-hour sessions was delivered by interdisciplinary experts.
    • Participants were residents of an assisted living community.
    • Control and intervention groups completed assessments at baseline and program completion, including the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and Fear of Falling scores.

    Main Results:

    • Both groups showed decreased Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Fear of Falling scores.
    • The intervention group demonstrated increased scores on a knowledge of falling questionnaire, unlike the control group.
    • These findings indicate the educational program was effective in enhancing fall knowledge and positively impacted participants' mobility and confidence.

    Conclusions:

    • Fall prevention education successfully increased older adults' knowledge of fall risk factors.
    • The program led to significant improvements in mobility (TUG) and reduced fear of falling.
    • The interdisciplinary approach positively impacted older adults' understanding and management of fall risks.
