Radical Autoxidation01:20

Radical Autoxidation

2.1K
The oxidation of an organic compound in the presence of air or oxygen is called autoxidation. For example, cumene reacts with oxygen to form hydroperoxide. Autoxidation involves initiation, propagation, and termination steps. Many organic compounds are susceptible to autoxidation—especially ethers in the presence of oxygen, which form hydroperoxides. Even though this reaction is slow, old ether bottles contain small amounts of peroxide, which leads to laboratory explosions during ether...

Electron Transport Chain: Complex I and II

10.1K
The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) is the main energy generation system in the eukaryotic cells. However, mitochondria also produce cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to the large electron flow during oxidative phosphorylation. While Complex I is one of the primary sources of superoxide radicals, ROS production by Complex II is uncommon and may only be observed in cancer cells with mutated complexes.
ROS generation is regulated and maintained at moderate levels necessary...

  • Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the capacity of the antioxidant system to neutralize them.
  • This imbalance leads to an overproduction of ROS and a diminished efficiency of the body's natural defense mechanisms.
  • The disruption of homeostasis associated with oxidative stress is implicated in numerous pathological conditions.
