Allergic Drug Reactions01:27

Allergic Drug Reactions

804
Allergic reactions related to drugs are hypersensitivity responses driven by the immune system and bear no connection to the drug's therapeutic action. While drugs in isolation do not trigger an immune response, they can interact with endogenous proteins to form antigens. These antigens stimulate lymphocytes to produce antibodies. IgE-type antibodies attach themselves to mast cells. Upon subsequent exposure to the same stimulus, the antigen-antibody interaction is initiated, unleashing...

Asthma-II: Pathophysiology and Classification

2.6K
Asthma is a prevalent chronic respiratory condition marked by inflammation and hyperresponsiveness of the airways. Its pathophysiology involves complex interactions among inflammatory pathways, immune responses, and neural mechanisms.
Additionally, environmental and genetic factors play crucial roles in determining an individual's susceptibility to asthma and the severity of their condition.
Critical processes in asthma pathophysiology include:

Hypersensitivities01:30

Hypersensitivities

481
Hypersensitivity, also known as a hypersensitivity reaction or allergic reaction, is a condition where the body's immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance. Such substances, that cause hypersensitivity are referred to as an allergen, could be something typically harmless to most people, like pollen or certain foods.
Types of Hypersensitivities
Hypersensitivity reactions are categorized into four types: Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4. Each type has a distinct mechanism...

Asthma: Pathogenesis and Management01:20

Asthma: Pathogenesis and Management

326
Asthma is a chronic pulmonary condition involving inflammation of the airways, hyper-reactivity, and reversible obstruction of the airways. This condition can significantly impact a person's quality of life, making breathing difficult and leading to distressing symptoms.
Asthma is classified as allergic and non-allergic. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander trigger allergic asthma, while factors like cold air, intense emotions, or exercise can induce non-allergic asthma.

Summary

Fibromyalgia (FM) patients show significantly higher rates of allergic diseases, including asthma, rhinitis, and skin allergies, compared to controls. This suggests a need for allergy screening in FM management.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Allergology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • The link between fibromyalgia (FM) and allergic conditions is not well-established.
  • Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between FM and allergies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of allergic diseases in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
  • To compare allergic comorbidity rates in FM patients versus a matched control group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, population-based case-control study.
  • Utilized International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes for diagnosis identification.
  • Included 15,869 FM patients and 79,345 matched controls from Leumit Health Services.

Main Results:

  • Fibromyalgia patients had higher odds of bronchial asthma (OR 1.91), allergic rhinitis (OR 1.60-1.30), and chronic rhinosinusitis (OR 2.46).
  • Increased prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis (OR 2.05), dermatitis (OR 1.48-1.41), urticaria, and chronic pruritus observed in FM group.
  • Higher rates of food allergies (OR 2.50 for anaphylaxis) and drug allergies were noted in fibromyalgia patients.

Conclusions:

  • Fibromyalgia is significantly associated with an increased prevalence of various allergic diseases.
  • Findings indicate a need for routine allergological assessment in the management of fibromyalgia patients.
