Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Reproductive Health
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Women with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) face higher risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes.
  • Many women with RMDs report lacking resources for informed reproductive decision-making.
  • Effective reproductive health support is crucial for managing RMDs during childbearing years.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot-test MyVoice:Rheum, a web-based decision aid for women with RMDs.
  • To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and usability of MyVoice:Rheum.
  • To evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of MyVoice:Rheum in promoting family planning discussions and improving reproductive knowledge and self-efficacy.

Main Methods:

  • A parallel-arm randomized pilot trial design was employed.
  • Women aged 18-44 with RMDs were assigned 3:1 to MyVoice:Rheum or a control pamphlet.
  • Feasibility, acceptability, usability, family planning discussions, reproductive knowledge, and communication self-efficacy were assessed.

Main Results:

  • MyVoice:Rheum was rated as feasible, acceptable, and easy to use by participants.
  • Family planning discussions occurred in 61% of MyVoice:Rheum users versus 44% of controls.
  • MyVoice:Rheum users showed increased self-efficacy and knowledge scores post-intervention.

Conclusions:

  • MyVoice:Rheum is a feasible, acceptable, and usable tool for women with RMDs.
  • Preliminary data suggest MyVoice:Rheum may enhance family planning discussions and patient empowerment in rheumatology settings.
  • Further large-scale studies are warranted to confirm these promising findings.
