Abstract:
Reconstructing facial structures after tumor removal is a complex challenge in maxillofacial surgery. The submental osteocutaneous flap offers a reliable and versatile solution for patients requiring reconstruction of the jaw and surrounding areas. This technique is particularly beneficial for individuals with underlying health conditions or advanced age, who may not tolerate more complex procedures such as free microvascular flaps. In our study, we describe the successful use of this flap in one patient with maxillofacial tumor. Our patient had part of the mandible reconstructed after cancer resection. The flap provided excellent outcomes, restoring both function and facial aesthetics. This approach leverages the submental artery's robust blood supply to transfer skin, soft tissue, and a segment of jawbone to the defect site. Additionally, a reverse blood flow variant of this technique expands its applications, allowing reconstruction in more distant facial regions. Our results demonstrate that the submental flap is an effective, safe, and practical alternative for patients who are not candidates for more invasive procedures. It ensures quick recovery and minimal complications, helping patients regain their appearance and quality of life after cancer surgery.
