Empathy02:34

Empathy

9.5K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Self-Report Tests of Personality

293
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. McNemar's Test

126
McNemar's Test is a nonparametric statistical test used to determine if there is a significant difference in proportions between two related groups when the outcome is binary (e.g., yes/no, success/failure). It is beneficial when we have paired data, such as pre-test/post-test designs, where the same subjects are measured under two different conditions. The test is named after the statistician Quinn McNemar, who introduced it in 1947. It is commonly used in situations where subjects are...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Maternal Mental Health
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Infant care involves complex emotions for mothers, including distress and significant effort to alleviate it.
  • The multifaceted experience of maternal compassion includes compassion fatigue, satisfaction, and self-compassion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and examine the construct validity of the Maternal Compassion Preoccupation Questionnaire (MCPQ).
  • To assess the multifaceted experience of maternal compassion in infant care.

Main Methods:

  • Developed and validated the 29-item Maternal Compassion Preoccupation Questionnaire (MCPQ) across two studies with 455 and 453 mothers of infants.
  • Examined convergent and discriminant validity, psychometric properties, and associations with postpartum depression, role satisfaction, and mindfulness.

Main Results:

  • The final 29-item MCPQ demonstrated good psychometric properties.
  • Compassion fatigue correlated positively with postpartum depression and negatively with role satisfaction and mindfulness.
  • Compassion satisfaction and self-compassion correlated negatively with postpartum depression and positively with role satisfaction and mindfulness.

Conclusions:

  • The Maternal Compassion Preoccupation Questionnaire is a reliable and valid measure.
  • The MCPQ facilitates understanding the complex experiences of mothers caring for young infants.
