Blinding

2.4K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Mental Health
  • Intervention Studies

Background:

  • Mental health challenges like depression and anxiety are prevalent globally.
  • Interpersonal transgressions can significantly impact psychological well-being.
  • Accessible interventions are needed to address these issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a brief, self-directed forgiveness workbook intervention.
  • To determine if the intervention impacts forgiveness, depression, and anxiety symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A multisite randomized waitlist-controlled trial involving 4598 participants.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to immediate or delayed (2-week) workbook intervention.
  • Outcomes measured included unforgiveness, depression, and anxiety symptoms at 2-week follow-up.

Main Results:

  • The immediate intervention group showed significantly lower unforgiveness compared to the delayed group (SMD=-0.53).
  • Significant reductions in depression symptoms (SMD=-0.22) and anxiety symptoms (SMD=-0.21) were observed in the immediate group.
  • These positive effects were evident at the 2-week follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • A brief, self-directed forgiveness workbook intervention is effective in promoting forgiveness.
  • The intervention successfully reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • This approach holds promise for broad dissemination to enhance global mental health.
