    Summary

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease.
    • Selenium is an essential trace element with antioxidant properties, crucial for glutathione peroxidase activity.
    • Glutathione peroxidase plays a role in mitigating oxidative stress implicated in inflammatory processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate serum selenium concentrations in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To determine the relationship between serum selenium levels and disease activity and duration in RA patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum selenium concentrations were measured in 87 RA patients.
    • Patients were categorized into groups based on disease course (active/disabling, protracted/mild, mild/short duration).
    • Statistical analysis was performed to compare selenium levels with reference values and correlate them with clinical parameters.

    Main Results:

    • Overall, RA patients exhibited significantly lower serum selenium levels compared to reference values (70.2 ± 13.3 vs. 79.8 ± 10.6 µg/l).
    • Patients with active, disabling RA showed the most pronounced reduction in serum selenium (63.7 ± 14.1 µg/l).
    • Significant correlations were observed between serum selenium and joint involvement (limitation of motion, active arthritis), hemoglobin, and IgG concentration.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum selenium levels are significantly reduced in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
    • The degree of selenium reduction correlates with disease severity, suggesting a potential role in RA pathogenesis.
    • Low selenium may be a contributing factor to the inflammatory processes in rheumatoid arthritis.
