Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
    |January 1, 1985

    Summary

Cell-mediated immunity in amoebic liver abscess patients shows temporary sensitization to Entamoeba histolytica antigen and increased T-lymphocytes. This immune response normalizes after successful treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) is a significant global health concern.
    • Understanding the host's immune response is crucial for managing ALA.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in patients with ALA.
    • To assess lymphocyte responses to Entamoeba histolytica antigen and phytohaemagglutinin (PHA).

    Main Methods:

    • Compared peripheral blood lymphocyte blastic transformation in 26 ALA patients and controls.
    • Measured stimulation index for Entamoeba histolytica antigen and PHA.
    • Quantified total and T-lymphocyte counts.

    Main Results:

    • Patients showed increased lymphocyte response to Entamoeba histolytica antigen (P < 0.01).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients exhibited reduced lymphocyte response to PHA (P < 0.01).
  • Elevated total and T-lymphocyte counts were observed in ALA patients (P < 0.01).
  • Conclusions:

    • Transient cellular sensitization to amoebic antigen occurs during active ALA.
    • Increased T-lymphocytes and impaired PHA response are characteristic of active ALA.
    • Immune parameters normalized in patients after successful treatment, indicating a temporary immune shift.
