Color Vision

433
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

    Area of Science:

    • Computer Vision
    • Image Processing
    • Human-Computer Interaction

    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of perceptual color differences (CDs) is crucial for smartphone photography.
    • Traditional CD metrics quantify color variations but lack intuitive explanations aligned with human perception.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present CD-Reasoning, a novel method for computing numerical CD scores and providing detailed rationales for image color differences.
    • To bridge quantitative CD assessment with qualitative human-like reasoning.

    Main Methods:

    • Compilation of a multi-modal CD dataset (M-SPCD) with textual descriptions of CDs across seven attributes.
    • Enhancement of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) using the M-SPCD dataset for CD score assessment and explanation generation.

    Main Results:

    • CD-Reasoning achieves superior accuracy compared to state-of-the-art CD metrics.
    • The method significantly outperforms leading MLLMs in interpreting color differences.

    Conclusions:

    • CD-Reasoning offers a more profound and explanatory analysis of image color differences.
    • The approach enhances quantitative assessments with qualitative reasoning, aligning better with human perception.
