    Background:

    • Expanding the field of view (FOV) in medical ultrasound is crucial for detecting tissue and organ abnormalities.
    • Conventional rigid ultrasound transducers have fixed imaging apertures determined during manufacturing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a flexible curvature abdominal array (FCAA) capable of dynamically expanding the FOV up to 120°.
    • To evaluate the imaging performance and clinical applicability of the novel FCAA.

    Main Methods:

    • A 128-element, 3-MHz FCAA was designed using a double-cut process and two-component viscoelastic substrates (TCVSs).
    • A 3-D-printed push-pull device enabled a minimum curvature radius of 46 mm.
    • A rigid-flexible composite backing layer was employed to optimize mechanical flexibility and bandwidth.

    Main Results:

    • The FCAA achieved high bandwidth (-6 dB to 67.6%) and excellent resolution (axial: 0.35 mm, lateral: 0.77 mm on phantom; axial: 0.36 mm, lateral: 1.02 mm at 120° FOV).
    • B-mode imaging of volunteer organs (kidneys, intestines, uterus, bladder) and Doppler imaging of a renal artery phantom demonstrated FCAA's efficacy.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed FCAA offers dynamic FOV expansion for enhanced abdominal ultrasound imaging.
    • The technology shows significant potential for clinical value in abdominal and gynecological examinations.
