Design and Preliminary Evaluation of a Novel Robotic System for Anterior Shoulder Reduction

    Abstract:

    Shoulder dislocations are the most common dislocations and there is a demand for a novel traction device for reducing anterior shoulder dislocations, which can be handled easily without a need for sedation or prolonged observation and recovery. Hence, this research paper proposes a robotic device specifically designed to reduce anterior shoulder dislocation. The device combines abduction and traction techniques to effectively relocate the humeral head into the glenoid fossa and the treatment is primarily based on the Modified Milch Technique, a commonly used technique by clinicians in the Accident and Emergency Departments for shoulder reduction. To assess its effectiveness, tests were conducted using a training dummy called the Shoulder IS Model, which is designed to train doctors in performing closed reduction techniques. Experimental results on the shoulder model show promising potential with a 100% success rate.Clinical relevance - The Modified Milch Technique is a popular technique that reduces anterior shoulder dislocations without the need for sedation or prolonged observation and recovery. Currently, this is performed manually. The proposed device aims to replicate and automate the Modified Milch Technique for shoulder reduction. This minimizes the need for manpower and the necessity for an experienced physician to be present throughout the procedure.
