    Summary

This study analyzed 64 spinal decompression surgeries, finding only 28% satisfactory outcomes. Factors like cancer type and deficit severity influenced results, with many patients dying within six months post-operation.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurosurgery
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Spinal cord compression is a serious complication of cancer.
    • Surgical decompression aims to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of surgical decompression for spinal cord compression.
    • To identify factors associated with satisfactory and unsatisfactory surgical results.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 64 cases treated between 1971 and 1982.
    • Surgical procedures included posterior decompression (60 cases) and anterior decompression (4 cases).
    • Myelography was the preferred diagnostic imaging, though not always essential.

    Main Results:

    • Overall, 70% of patients died within six months post-operation.
    • Only 28% of cases achieved satisfactory results.
    • Factors predicting satisfactory outcomes included nasopharyngeal carcinoma, mild neurologic deficit, intact sphincter control, gradual onset, and lumbar involvement.
    • Unsatisfactory outcomes were associated with lung, breast, or liver cancers, severe deficits, loss of sphincter control, sudden onset, and thoracic involvement.

    Conclusions:

    • Surgical decompression for spinal cord compression yields poor outcomes in a majority of cases.
    • Prognosis is significantly influenced by the type of cancer, neurological status, and level of spinal involvement.
    • Further research is needed to improve treatment strategies and patient survival rates.
