Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Anterior shoulder instability requires surgical intervention, with Latarjet and Bankart repairs being common procedures.
  • Understanding patient perspectives is crucial for improving perioperative care and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze public Instagram posts regarding the Latarjet procedure and Bankart repair.
  • To elucidate patient perspectives on the perioperative process, satisfaction, and expectations for these shoulder surgeries.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive social media investigation of Instagram posts related to anterior shoulder instability surgery from January 2023 to January 2024.
  • Posts were categorized by perspective, timing, content, tone, and satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • Of 526 posts on shoulder instability surgery, 201 were by patients, with 42.3% detailing personal experiences.
  • Most posts were neutral or positive. Rehabilitation was frequently mentioned for both Bankart and Latarjet repairs.
  • No significant differences were found in immobilization, rehabilitation, return to sport, tone, or satisfaction between the two procedures. Latarjet posts more frequently mentioned the surgical site (P=.011).

Conclusions:

  • Social media reflects generally neutral to positive patient experiences with Latarjet and Bankart procedures for anterior shoulder instability.
  • Patient satisfaction, tone, and return to activities are comparable between the two surgical methods.
  • Complications are rarely mentioned; recurrence is the most common for Bankart, while postoperative pain is most frequent for Latarjet.
