Community disaster literacy is limited, but preparedness is moderate. Increasing disaster literacy, having a disaster kit, and making family plans positively impact preparedness. Public health nurses should enhance education and training.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Disaster Management
- Community Health
Background:
- Disaster literacy and preparedness are crucial for community resilience.
- Limited understanding of the relationship between these factors hinders effective disaster response planning.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlation between disaster literacy and disaster preparedness in a community post-earthquake.
- To identify factors influencing disaster preparedness.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 414 adult participants in Türkiye after the February 6, 2023 earthquake.
- Utilized the Disaster Literacy Scale (DLS) and Disaster Preparedness Scale (DPS).
- Data analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation, and multiple linear regression.
Main Results:
- Participants exhibited limited disaster literacy (DLS: 33.08 ± 6.72) and moderate disaster preparedness (DPS: 31.89 ± 5.15).
- A significant positive correlation (r = 0.242, P = 0.000) was found between disaster literacy and preparedness.
- Higher disaster literacy was associated with higher education, disaster training, home disaster plans, and disaster kits.
Conclusions:
- The community's disaster literacy is limited, necessitating targeted interventions.
- Disaster preparedness is moderately developed but can be enhanced through increased literacy, disaster kits, home insurance, and family planning.
- Public health nurses play a vital role in improving community disaster literacy through education and training programs.
