Metronidazole for chronic diarrhoea in children
Metronidazole did not significantly shorten the duration of prolonged diarrhea in children. This study found no difference in recovery time between children receiving metronidazole and those given a placebo for persistent diarrhea.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Infectious Diseases
- Clinical Pharmacology
Background:
- Prolonged diarrhea in children is a significant health concern.
- Metronidazole is an antibiotic often used to treat certain types of infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of metronidazole in treating prolonged diarrhea in pediatric patients.
- To compare the duration of diarrhea in children treated with metronidazole versus placebo.
Main Methods:
- A double-blind, prospective, controlled trial was conducted.
- Participants were children admitted to Goroka Hospital with diarrhea lasting seven days or more.
- Treatment groups received either metronidazole or a placebo.
Main Results:
- The mean duration of diarrhea after treatment initiation was 4.3 days for the metronidazole group.
- The mean duration of diarrhea after treatment initiation was 4.1 days for the placebo group.
- No statistically significant difference in diarrhea duration was observed between the two groups.
Conclusions:
- Metronidazole showed no significant benefit over placebo in reducing the duration of prolonged diarrhea in this pediatric population.
- Further research may be needed to identify effective treatments for persistent diarrhea in children.
