    Summary

    Hypergravity exposure in female rats can trigger a prolactin surge, but only with specific timing and duration. Male rats did not show similar prolactin level changes under hypergravity conditions.

    Background:

    • Previous studies indicated acute hypergravity (HG) induces prolonged diestrous in rats, reversible with continuous HG exposure.
    • Bromocriptine was identified as a preventive agent against HG-induced prolonged diestrous.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the specific conditions of hypergravity exposure that elicit a prolactin surge in female rats.
    • To determine if male rats exhibit similar prolactin responses to hypergravity stimulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Female rats were exposed to 3.14 G for 20 hours (D-1 1200 h to D-2 0800 h).
    • Prolactin levels were measured at D-2 1600 h.
    • Control exposures included shorter durations (8 h) or different timing (19 h: D-1 0700 h to D-2 0200 h).
    • Male rats underwent similar HG exposure protocols.

    Main Results:

    • A significant prolactin surge was observed in female rats following 20 hours of HG exposure.
    • Shorter or differently timed HG exposures failed to induce a prolactin surge in females.
    • HG exposure did not significantly alter prolactin levels in male rats.

    Conclusions:

    • Specific duration and timing of hypergravity exposure are critical for inducing prolactin surges in female rats.
    • The hypothalamus may exhibit differential responses to HG stimulation between male and female rats.
