    Summary

Etretinate treatment for psoriasis can lead to acute hepatitis, potentially progressing to chronic active hepatitis. This case highlights the risk of significant liver disease in patients undergoing etretinate therapy.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Immunology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Etretinate is a retinoid used for severe psoriasis.
    • Hepatotoxicity is a known, though rare, side effect of etretinate.
    • Monitoring liver function is crucial during etretinate therapy.

    Observation:

    • A patient with severe psoriasis developed acute hepatitis while on etretinate.
    • Histological liver changes progressed to chronic active hepatitis after discontinuing etretinate.
    • This represents the third reported case of chronic active hepatitis linked to etretinate.

    Findings:

    • The patient showed increased OKMI-staining peripheral mononuclear cells.
    • Concanavalin A-induced lymphocyte blastogenesis was augmented by etretinate.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Immunological changes may play a role in etretinate-induced liver injury.
  • Implications:

    • Etretinate therapy carries a risk of severe, progressive liver disease.
    • Further research into the immunological mechanisms of etretinate hepatotoxicity is warranted.
    • Clinicians should be vigilant for hepatic complications in patients treated with etretinate.
