Insights
A patient undergoing rectal cancer treatment was unexpectedly found to have severe coronary artery stenosis. This case highlights the importance of thorough preoperative evaluation for complex cardiac and oncologic management.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Oncology
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Rectal cancer patients require careful preoperative assessment.
- Coronary artery disease is a common comorbidity in older adults.
- Preoperative cardiac evaluation is crucial for surgical risk stratification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a case of incidental coronary artery stenosis in a patient with rectal cancer.
- To discuss the challenges in managing patients with concurrent severe cardiac and oncologic conditions.
- To emphasize the importance of comprehensive preoperative evaluations.
Main Methods:
- Case report.
- Review of patient's medical history and diagnostic workup.
- Discussion of clinical decision-making process.
Main Results:
- Severe coronary artery stenosis was unexpectedly diagnosed during preoperative evaluation for rectal cancer.
- The patient's case presented a complex scenario requiring multidisciplinary team discussion.
Conclusions:
- Incidental findings of severe coronary artery stenosis can occur during preoperative assessment for other conditions.
- Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for optimizing treatment strategies in patients with complex comorbidities.
- Thorough preoperative evaluation is critical for identifying and managing potentially life-threatening conditions before major surgery.
Abstract:
In this case report, we describe the experience of a patient who was initially admitted for rectal cancer treatment. However, during the preoperative evaluation, severe stenosis of the coronary arteries was unexpectedly detected, presenting the medical team with a complex decision-making process.
